Working in a high street law firm might not seem glamorous at first, but it’s a career choice that can really let you shine, offering both professional fulfilment and personal satisfaction. After spending 25 rewarding years at one and talking with friends and colleagues who’ve worked at larger firms, I can genuinely share five perks of choosing a “smaller” firm.

1. Quality of Work

Being at a high street firm, does not mean there is a compromise on the quality of work you will undertake. Most are multi-disciplinary practices and therefore this array of legal disciplines and expertise enables them to attract quality work across the firm. This variety also means you’ll work with colleagues from different specialties, broadening your legal knowledge and playing a key role in helping your clients through their legal journeys. Furthermore, you may also have the opportunity to work on other areas of law within the broader discipline of which you may specialise, enabling you to be a more well-rounded lawyer within your field.

In addition, and as a junior lawyer, you’re given real responsibilities early on, allowing you to take charge of cases and interact directly with clients. This hands-on experience is incredibly rewarding, as you get to see cases through from start to finish. You’ll often work closely with individuals, families, and local businesses, making a real difference in their lives. Each piece of advice you give and every document you draft has a direct impact on someone’s life or livelihood, which is a great feeling.

2. Progression Opportunities

Climbing the career ladder can often be more straightforward at high street firms. With fewer layers of hierarchy, your hard work and dedication are more easily noticed and rewarded. Smaller firms are usually more meritocratic, meaning if you show commitment and capability, you can progress quickly. Whether aiming for partner level or exploring different areas of law, the path to advancement is clear and supported by senior colleagues who are genuinely invested in your growth.

3. Making a Real Difference in the Community

One of the best parts about working at a high street firm is the impact you can have on your local community as most of your clients will be local residents. The work you do can have an immediate and direct effect on their lives. Helping a young couple buy their first home, assisting a family with future planning through wills and trusts, or defending someone’s rights in a dispute – your efforts significantly contribute to the community’s well-being. This connection gives a deep sense of purpose and satisfaction that’s hard to find elsewhere.

4. A Supportive Work Environment

High street law firms are typically smaller and foster a close-knit, supportive environment. Teamwork and camaraderie are paramount, and there’s always a colleague willing to lend a hand or offer advice. The smaller team size means everyone’s contributions are valued, creating a collaborative culture where every team member plays a crucial role in the firm’s success.

5. Work-Life Balance

Lastly, high street firms have always offered a great work-life balance. They have been doing so for many years, long before their larger counterparts. It’s usually ingrained in their culture and while the work is still demanding and challenging, the environment tends to be more flexible and understanding of your personal commitments.

Conclusion

In summary, working at a high street law firm offers a unique blend of professional development, quality work, career progression, community impact, and personal fulfilment.

It’s a career path that can allow you to grow as a junior solicitor, achieve that promotion you are craving or on the flip side, rid yourself of the managerial burden of partnership or being head of department and get back to what you love the most, advising clients. Whatever your path, high street law firms are an excellent choice.
