Changes to Paternity Leave: What You Need To Know!
As a result of the Paternity Leave (Amendment) Regulations 2024 as of 6th April 2024 the law surrounding Paternity Leave is changing as the Government continues to evolve the landscape in this area in a series of ‘family friendly’ amendments.
The key changes are as follows:-
1. Employees are now able to separate their leave into separate 1 week blocks as opposed to the current arrangement of being obliged to take their entire 2 week entitlement at once.
2. They will be able to take their leave at any time in the 52 week period after the birth or adoption of the child.
3. The notice period for the Employee to give has shortened considerably in that the Employee will now only be obliged to give 28 days notice for each period of leave.
4. Employees are able to vary the dates of their leave on just 28 days notice.
The Regulations are now in force and will affect any eligible fathers/ partners of babies whose expected week of birth or adoption date is after 6th April 2024. It therefore does not provide Employers with much time to adapt to the changes and to ensure that their current policies and procedures are in line with what is required.
These Regulations are part of a raft of changes being made in this area and with an election on the horizon it may be difficult for both Employees and Employers to navigate through the changes effectively and to stay informed.
